Sayaka Kawamua: Bon Voyage

EVENT DESCRIPTION

To celebrate ODD ONE OUT 11th Anniversary and the last exhibition of 2022, ODD ONE OUT is pleased to present “Bon Voyage” by Japanese printmaker Sayaka Kawamua. The exhibition will be held at ODD ONE OUT on the 22nd of November until the 14th of December 2022.

The sense of memory and home is strongly ingrained in Sayaka Kawamura’s work. She sees the places we come from as integral parts of us and a strong influence on the development of the self. For Sayaka, her hometown is Hokkaido and she carries a piece of it with her everywhere on her journey through life. Dream-like scenes are constructed from memories of home that reside in her subconsciousness; nostalgic recollections manifest themselves into people, animals and boats.

Sayaka channels her bond to home and her life experiences into every step of the process. By working with Mokuhanga, a technique traditional to Japan for more than 400 years, Sayaka weaves place and experiences with textures and colors, memories and feelings across time are carved into wood and impressed onto washi paper.

ABOUT THE ARTIST / ORGANISER

Sayaka Kawamura was born in Hokkaido, Japan. In 2016, She graduated with a Masters in Printmaking at Tama Art University Graduate School. She was awarded the grand prize at the 11th Kochi International Print Triennial in 2020, and she participated in the Ueno Artist Project “Everyday Life: I am reborn” (Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum) in 2021.
