EVENT DESCRIPTION

K11 Group, in partnership with the British Council, is showcasing the Asia debut of Phyllida Barlow’s ‘untitled: folly; baubles’ to celebrate the life and great talent of the late British artist.

Originally commissioned by the British Council and representing the United Kingdom at the 57th Venice Biennale in 2017, Phyllida Barlow’s “untitled: folly; baubles” is a larger-than-life masterpiece which enthralled visitors with its unique blend of whimsy and grandeur. K11 MUSEA brought this Phyllida Barlow’s work to its annual flagship art programme Art Karnival as its Asia debut, and it is free for all to see and appreciate, and to celebrate her life together. K11 MUSEA Art Karnival is held from 20 March to 14 May to offer immersive art and cultural experiences to the public.

Jilly Ding, Head of Research and Acquisition, K11 Art Foundation said, “Phyllida Barlow was a pioneering artist whose works were powerful and evocative, often challenging the conventional notions of space and material. Looking ahead, K11 Art Foundation will introduce more spaces devoted to art, and continue to be a platform that enhances cultural exchange between East and West.”

Susannah Morley, Director Hong Kong, British Council, said in the event in celebration of Phyllida Barlow’s masterpiece, “Phyllida Barlow was a true inspiration to so many people having combined her work as an artist with that as a mentor and teacher, nurturing the talent of young artists as a lecturer in sculpture at the University of the West of England and at the Slade school of Art in London.” She added, “The British

Council had a close association with Phyllida Barlow. We commissioned her to create ‘untitled: folly; baubles’ for the British Pavilion for the 57th Venice Biennale in 2017. We are thrilled see this inspiring work here in Hong Kong alongside the Victoria Harbour. It is a fitting tribute to a remarkable life and career.”

The partnership between K11 Group and the British Council comes as a natural fit as both organisations play an important role in connecting people and communities through the arts and culture. K11 Group is dedicated to offering immersive art and cultural experiences to the public, exemplified by its flagship art programme K11 MUSEA Art Karnival, which is in its third run this year, with Barlow’s artwork as one of the highlights. The British Council has been building connections, understanding and trust between peoples, communities and countries worldwide through culture and education. This year marks its 75th Anniversary in Hong Kong. Looking ahead, the K11 Art Foundation will explore further co-creation opportunities with the British Council, including developing educational and English language collaborations.

Following its debut in Hong Kong, “untitled: folly; baubles” will then travel to K11 ECOAST, K11 Group’s first flagship project in the Chinese mainland, in 2024. The presentation of Barlow’s work exhibition continues at K11 MUSEA until November, 2023.
