EVENT DESCRIPTION

The space between the absolute and its alternate.
Paying homage to the unwritten dictates of Hong Kong’s unique vernacular spaces, and Tai Hang’s long-standing garages, shops and dwellings. Salvaging the familiar, the overlooked, and the uncanny, SIDE SPACE aspires to explore the space between the absolute and its alternate, and aspires to stimulate an environment of diversity and perspectives.

The SIDE SPACE’s third exhibition will be a collaboration with Hong Kong artist LOUSY, incorporating one of LOUSY’s signature motif ( the buddha ) into Hong Kong industrial found object. The juxtaposition of decaying/ used metal and the peaceful buddha strikes an interesting contrast. Lousy’s practice of projecting positive vibrations, to the idea of balance, decay and rebirth.

ABOUT THE ARTIST / ORGANISER

Hong Kong native Lousy draws on all surfaces across all spaces, taking cues from the proactive and spontaneous energy of the streets. Departing from the Lucerne cave paintings and the lines of Jean Cocteau, Lousy strips down his visual language to simplified, wavy, rhythmic lines with a bright neon palette, forming the basis of his distinctive style.

Responding to the saturation of information, the artist distils universally recognisable concepts into his stylised motifs like the prominent kiss face, Buddha and all-seeing eye. The repetitive deployment of his lexicon points to a prolonged obsession that sits at the heart of the artist’s practice: a desire to locate the interstices of our grand narratives.
