EVENT DESCRIPTION

Galerie Koo is delighted to announce its exciting exhibition “Repetition is a Form of Change” by Jon Poblador, American artist. Through his artworks, he expresses the meditative properties of repetitious mark making.

Poblador is a contemporary painter best known for his monochromatic, minimalistic approach to art. He encourages viewers to approach his work by seeing them as what they simply are: formal qualities of shape, line, colour, texture, etc. There is no representation, no narrative, and no illusion of anything else. The framework of the grid, however, is an important factor that ties them together.

“Anything that repeats will always make some kind of pattern. I primarily work with geometric shapes because its orderliness is appealing to me. And so, a grid structure will naturally show up when rectilinear shapes repeat,” Poblador stated.

Prayer, meditation, and ritual, which are foundations of many religions are, in essence, different forms of repetition. It is a way for people to make a connection with the divine. Poblador sees his paintings and drawings as religious works of art. Mark making, geometry, and the grid are the prayers that are repeated over and over again.

“Repetition came to symbolize a re-affirmation of my beliefs. Each piece is like a prayer that acknowledged and celebrated the beauty in the geometry that I admired,” Poblador stated.
“We are delighted to collaborate with Poblador to showcase his artworks to art and culture enthusiasts in Hong Kong,” says Cecilia Koo, Gallerist of Galerie Koo. “Through his magnificent techniques, Poblador opens up a dialogue with the audience to their inner landscape. This exhibition will serve as an inspiration for the audience to reflect on their own worldview.”

Galerie Koo continues to promote contemporary art with beauty and colours to art lovers of all levels domestically and internationally. The exhibition continues to make a contribution to promoting Hong Kong’s cultural and creative industries.
