EVENT DESCRIPTION

Organised by the Hong Kong Arts Centre, Cultural Masseur Festival 2022 kick started in May with a freshly announced programme line-up. In the second half of 2022, the Festival will present five cross-disciplinary highlighted programmes.

Themed on arts & mentality, participatory drama workshop “Day-Daycare Night-Nightcare” is co-created by four artists from different backgrounds, including Chester Wong, Ray LC, Amy Cheung and Ming-yan Ho, which will lead audience to reflect on the past so as to imagine the future; Mexican musician Nahum will present his new work “Stories From Home” in arousing audience’s awareness of the ecology of our Mother Earth via the technology of artificial intelligence and data collected from satellites. His audio-visual concert “ACT 1” will feature local band Rock Hill Street and will take the audience on an otherworldly journey to appreciate the experience of living on Earth and existing in the Universe. Mixed-media artist Tang Kwok-hin will present his latest performance theatre and exhibition “Neither Fish Nor Fowl”, leading the audience to explore collective memories, imagination and reality. Themed around mathematics and semiotics, media artist Gaybird will launch his new work “0 X ANYTHING = 0?”. In this exhibition, scientific data collected in town, such as sound waves, map routes, weather forecast and traffic patterns, are re-illustrated and re-represented in forms of programming and graphic design, sound installation, as well as space and moving images. Last but not least, our seed funding project “Y.L.S.L. Self-rescuing Amusement Package” features young artist Catherince Tsui who will question the formulae of entertainment shows, and will try to fix this show business via her experimental drama show.

A number of cross-disciplinary artful experiences will hit the town from September to November 2022. The Festival strives to expand the boundaries of disciplines, identifying overlapping areas, and orienting art at the core of the discourse of human advancement in an ecological sense (for details of each programme, please refer to our Appendix). Our online podcast series “Cultural Masseur Talking Heads Podcast” is now on Spotify. Seven episodes which are already on shelf invoke interdisciplinary conversations to explore and deconstruct the metaverse. In the second half of the year, the podcast series will invite more creatives to share their artistic journey in presenting programmes under the Cultural Masseur Festival!

ABOUT THE ARTIST / ORGANISER

“Cultural Masseur” connects the dots in the cultural scene, helping to uncover the beauty in our daily lives, as well as responding to daily lives with arts. The project, targeted at young people, adults, and early retirees, brings arts into life through an array of carefully curated programmes: guided tours, talks, workshops, internship and apprenticeship, as well as the process of art-making. These programmes may enlighten the participants to see the world in an artful way, and they will in turn enlighten others as an active audience through sharing of what they know about the arts, and ultimately becoming “cultural masseurs” themselves. Only through connecting arts and everyday living can arts thrive in a city and culture be passed on.
