EVENT DESCRIPTION

In the first of a series of four movement workshops designed to relieve stress and restore physical and mental balance, participants explore the use of water balloons to aid relaxation

Through a series of four original movement workshops, dance artist Wayson Poon employs concepts from his uniquely evolved practice of dance to explore the body, mindfulness and relaxation. Each workshop consists of two 2-hour sessions based around natural elements, eastern and western methodologies and art. All four workshops are conceptually interconnected, and can be enjoyed as a full series or individually. No prior dance, movement or meditation experience necessary.

Workshop 1: Stillness

In this workshop, participants explore the use of water balloons to gently massage the body, release tension and aid relaxation. Using the balloons as a tool for sensory exploration they observe the characteristics of water through touch, hearing and movement. In the second session, participants learn how to create marbled-effect paintings with water and oil-based colours. The focus of both sessions is observation, self-perception, patience and the release of tension.

ABOUT THE ARTIST / ORGANISER

Independent Hong Kong contemporary dance artist Wayson Poon works as a creator, performer and educator, and has conducted research and development in Europe and Asia. Between 2010 and 2014, he lived and worked in Beijing and established the dance company The Body Acts. Poon has explored and developed a movement language and practice that can be uniquely adapted to all bodies. This practice, known as OnthewayDance, combines eastern and western spiritual methodologies and is guided by Taoist notions of “Qi”, and the movement and meditation practices Liquid Body and 5Rhythms.

Poon’s movement workshops have been presented in the US, Europe, Asia and Australia. In 2016 Poon received the Hong Kong Arts Development Award for Young Artist (Dance). He was nominated for the Hong Kong Dance Award – Tom Brown Emerging Choreographer in 2018 and awarded the Asian Cultural Council Fellowship in 2019.
