EVENT DESCRIPTION

The Hong Kong Art Gallery Association (HKAGA) is pleased to announce the return of UNSCHEDULED, a showcase of 15 Hong Kong galleries, which will take place from 2 to 6 September 2021 at the former TopShop location on Queen’s Road Central.

Established by the HKAGA during and as a response to the rise of COVID-19 in 2020, UNSCHEDULED is neither a traditional art fair nor a museum exhibition, but a platform for selling and networking for local galleries. After a successful first edition held at Tai Kwun last year, the return of the event will present solo exhibitions from 15 HKAGA gallery members, highlighting works that respond to the new venue as a past fashion retail center.

The fair’s location in the former Topshop venue lends itself to wider accessibility for the general public to visit the fair along with the art community, and the opportunity to showcase special exhibitions in response to its history. Designed by BEAU Architects, the floor plan is decentralised and sprawls across 20,000 square feet and most aspects of the two levels have been resourcefully repurposed for exhibiting artwork—including the changing rooms and staircases. Booths are separated by hanging, transparent PVC curtains as opposed to walls, providing sufficient space for the galleries and allowing for a free flow between other sections of the layout, forming a more open and interactive space.

The participating galleries are selected by an independent selection team comprised of Hong Kong-based curators, Jing Chin-Yin Chong and Clara Wong, who have crafted an interconnected experience for visitors beyond the standard art fair, creating a déjà vu like experience from fragments of our cityscape. Continuing from 2020, the organising committee is spearheaded by Fabio Rossi (Co-President, HKAGA) and Willem Molesworth (Vice-President, HKAGA).

The 2021 fair is sponsored by Lead Partner Hublot, which will showcase a range of special watches that complement pieces from their collection by Orlinski, Marc Ferrero, and Lang Lang and Sang Bleu that will be on display in a distinctive VIP Lounge section for the fair.
