“Dope”, “GOAT”, “Emo”, an influx of playful Internet slang has washed old expressions ashore, traditional vocabularies are being replaced by the creations of Gen Z gradually. Beyond language, Hong Kong is a city pulsing with creativity at every corner — from neon signs lighting up chaotic streets, graffiti on the walls of dim alleys, to fashionable cover with a distinctively Hong Kong touch – unconventional art forces are sparking new possibilities by taking in the majestic, the mundane, and everything in between.

This summer, playful and relatable local creatives artforms take over K11 Art Mall. Taking our city as inspiration, Carnaby Fair Art Gallery proudly presents SUB(X)TURE Cultural Festival. A number of fashion-forward and culturally-aware brands also support the festival, collaborating with six creatives from various fields to present eight unique Instagrammable spots that celebrate local culture, including:

Instagrammabe spot 1: The Plumber King x DaddyBoy® first large-scale “graffiti” in English over K11 Art Mall’s 10-metre wide glass window

Street calligraphy master Yim Chiu-tong, The Plumber King, collaborates with DaddyBoy® to title the event SUB(X)TURE in English for the first time, with K11 Art Mall’s massive 10-metre wide glass window as the canvas. A must-see sight for fans of his distinctive art form!

Instagrammabe spot 2: McCafé x Ernest Chang Hong Kong comic book style, surreal outer space-themed mobile hawker van

Young contemporary artist Ernest Chang fuses raw local street culture with Pop Art to debut a visual installation in collaboration with McCafé. A comic book style mobile hawker van with a surreal outer space theme is open for McCafé signature coffee redemption to everyone who completes the required steps every Friday to Sunday. For more visual impact, there is also a futuristic coffee bean art installation on site, giving you a multi-sensory experience!

Instagrammable spot 3: Lalamove delivers The Plumber King tools to K11 Art Mall multimedia showcase

The Plumber King Yim Chiu Tong sends his tools and paintings to K11 Art Mall with local courier Lalamove. The Plumber King’s iconic calligraphy is found on Lalamove’s sharp orange motorbike and packaging boxes. The usual Hong Kong roadside scene and Lalamove’s fleet were brought inside K11 Art Mall and turned into an artsy photo spot, presenting an authentic Hong Kong. Besides, there is a Lalamove-special instant photo booth to take a picture on the spot!

Instagrammable spot 4 & 5: DaddyBoy® creates Cyberpunk holographic VR game space for geeks and DaddyBoy® x Martell Noblige immersive word art installation

Street kid DaddyBoy® merges e-sports VR with anime in his legendary Cyberpunk VR gaming space, specifically designed for all gamers, and collaborates with Martell Noblige to set up an immersive word art installation that manifests the attitude of I AM AWARE THAT I AM RARE. Every Friday to Sunday, redeem a free Martell x DaddyBoy® eco shopping bag by completing the required steps!

Instagrammable spot 6: Polly Chan x YAU Cantonese slang neon sign installation

Local neon sign brand founder Polly Chan partners with local craft brewer YAU to transform new-age Cantonese slangs into traditional neon signs, blending old and new collective memories. YAU sets up a limited-period beer redemption station near G/F Atrium to distribute two types of craft beer with an uniquely Hong Kong taste.

Instagrammable spot 7: Elphonso Lam’s version of Hong Kong films, take pictures with iconic characters

Caricuratist Elphoson Lam, brings to K11 Art Mall a selection of memorable characters and clips from classic Hong Kong comedies, including Shaolin Abbot from “The God of Cookery” and One-Eyed Man from “Tricky Brains”. Through his paintings, the audience gets to travel back in time to appreciate the endless creativity of the nonsensical era all over again. Come and take pictures with all the legendary characters!

Instagrammable spot 8: SIUKINS’ faithful rendition of century-old heritage restaurant Ser Wong Fun (“Snake King”) multimedia showcase

Local illustrator SIUKINS recreates the scene of the century-old Ser Wong Fun, Hong Kong’s king of snake chowder and designs a new image for the historical restaurant. Telling a tale of the old times with his psychedelic design.

In addition to the diverse artworks, Carnaby Fair is releasing a variety of exclusive and trendy merchandise designed with Hong Kong culture in mind, including T-shirts and baseball caps; classic movie toy series will be available for sale on site to make Hong Kong movies a cult again!
