Crafts on Peel announces its third thematic exhibition in Hong Kong – Stories Encapsulated: Wood, featuring creations in wood handcrafted by local and overseas craftsmen. Stories Encapsulated: Wood is co-curated by Penelope Luk, Creative Director of Crafts on Peel, and Ken Chow, carpenter and founder of Yat Muk Studio, and will also celebrate Crafts on Peel’s second anniversary since its launch in January 2020.

The exhibition will present nine collaborative works in wood by traditional craftsmen and contemporary artisans in Hong Kong, as well as other local and overseas creations in wood. From small decorative objects and carvings, to furniture pieces and wooden structures, this exhibition will showcase the unique styles, techniques and heritage of wood crafting in Hong Kong.

Highlighting the traditional history of wood crafting techniques to its contemporary adaptations in Hong Kong today, each work in this exhibition is imbued with the passion and effort from the craftsmen throughout the making process. Working in tandem, traditional craftsmen and contemporary artisans are brought together to inspire each other and integrate their collective skills to create new works in wood for today’s lifestyle. Selected pieces from overseas craftsmen will also be exhibited alongside local craftsmen, allowing visitors to view these craft works in a global context. The exhibition further invites audience to feel and explore various types of finishing methods including lacquer, wax, soap and more.

Participating local artisans include: Master Lam Che, Master Siu Ping Keung, Master Wong Kin Hung, Linus K, Lau Wai Cheong, Ken Chow, Yan Yung, Yip Chun Hang, Jesse Hao, Roy Ng, Jacky Lam, Cecilia Lai, Barnard Chan, Vivian Law, Justin Chan, Chris Cheung, and Kanok Wan. Select collaborations are participants of Crafts on Peel’s Craft Exchange Program which supports apprenticeships and provides a platform for sharing of ideas and techniques among craftsmen and artisans in the region.

Highlights include the following collaborations across generations and disciplines that made possible by the Craft Exchange Program:
Chamber of Time, a tambour door cabinet created by Master Siu Ping Keung and Ken Chow;
Symphony of Weaves, a contemporary wooden loom by Cecilia Lai, Barnard Chan and Ken Chow;
The Passage, a series of lacquer works by Master Wong Kin Hung and Jacky Lam using sustainable screw pine

In addition to local artisans, Crafts on Peel is also pleased to present works from all over the world. Overseas artisans include Jonas Lutz from Finland and Damian Boylan from the United Kingdom.

Crafts on Peel is a charitable organization to revive, reinterpret and perpetuate traditional craftsmanship by fostering collaborations between traditional craftsmen and contemporary artisans through apprenticeship and exchange of techniques to nurture the younger generations of craftsmanship. Through collaborations, artisans breathe new life into traditional crafts, reviving and prolonging their beauty and precious values in our times.

Located in a historic building in the heart of Hong Kong, Crafts on Peel also serves as a creative venue–through thematic exhibitions, workshops, Artisan-in-Residence, Craft Exchange Program and experiential retail platform, to enhance our appreciation of craftsmanship and facilitate our understanding about the culture, customs and aesthetics along the stream of history.
