EVENT DESCRIPTION

This December, Sotheby’s, together with HomeArt and Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF&OC) and Hong Kong Olympic Fans Club (HKOFC), will present Olympic Dreams, a charity auction to benefit the SF&OC Sports Legacy Scheme which supports local underprivileged students, and retired or planning to retire athletes to pursue their dreams in sports.

To be held on 22 December, the auction offers over 30 lots donated by artists, collectors, galleries, as well as sporting memorabilia donated by Hong Kong Olympic athletes. Works on offer include a new series of paintings by Peter McDonald commissioned for the event by HomeArt and themed around the Tokyo Olympics, as well as works by Damien Hirst, Takashi Murakami, Yoshitomo Nara, Zeng Fanzhi, Simon Birch, Mak Ying-Tung, Cheung Tsz-Hin, among others.

Additional highlights include autographed items donated by our Event Ambassadors: a signed foil from fencer Edgar Cheung Ka-Long and a signed artwork by epee fencer Vivian Kong Man-Wai. Also adding to the list is a signed T-Shirt from the Olympic China Diving Team.

Inspired by the achievements of the Hong Kong athletes at the Tokyo Olympics, Peter McDonald created a new series of nine acrylic works centred around the champions and of their winning categories including fencing, swimming, table tennis, track cycling and karate, all of which portray the energy on the playing field. Among the series there is a painting depicting the podium, capturing the celebratory moment when the winning athletes were given their medals.

While Hong Kong athletes are committed to their training, they are also dedicated and supportive to charitable endeavours. Fencer Edgar Cheung Ka-Long and Vivian Kong Man-Wai, Cycler Sarah Lee Wai-Sze, together with Table Tennis players Doo Hoi-Kem, Minnie Soo Wai-Yam and Lee Ho-Ching have generously donated signed autographs and other memorabilia for this event. Most of these items are related to this year’s Tokyo Olympic Games, all with special significance.
