Olivier Cong: His Temple

EVENT DESCRIPTION

On 10 June at Concert Hall of Hong Kong City Hall, composer Olivier Cong will collaborate with dance artists Ong Yong Lock and Zelia ZZ Tan to create a dialogue of contemporary music and dance inspired by Guy de Maupassant’s short story Clair de Lune.

Karena Lam, decade-long ambassador of the French May Arts Festival, will unprecedentedly participate in the production through voice acting based on the script written by herself and Cong. Featuring a unique line-up of local artists, the conversational performance invites the audience to contemplate the meaning of beauty through the lens of devotion and obsession, discovering the delicate connection of pure love and crafts.

Having a lifelong passion for music from a young age, Hong Kong-based musician and composer Olivier Cong has been working with varied forms of music and sound art for film, dance, and theatre through collaboration with leading key players and art organisations in the industry. He debuted his album A Ghost & His Paintings in early 2018 on his self-founded label, Raven & the sea, and was awarded Hong Kong’s first Apple Music spotlight artist.

ABOUT THE ARTIST / ORGANISER

Hong Kong-based musician and composer, Olivier Cong began his musical life studying violin and piano as a child. After finishing his college studies in psychology, Cong has been working with varied forms of music and sound art. He has produced site-specific concerts and also sound installations, and continues to play different roles, such as producer and music director in productions. He also writes music for film, dance and theatre, notable collaborators including Director Tian Zhuangzhuang and Ann Hui, Hong Kong Ballet, Shanghai Opera house, Chungying Theatre, O Theatre Workshop, West Kowloon Cultural District and K11 Art Foundation.

His debut album Ghost & his Paintings was released in early 2018 on his own founded label, Raven & the sea, and was awarded Hong Kong's first Apple Music spotlight artist.

Born in Malaysia, Ong Yong Lock is a choreographer, performer, and educator. He joined the Hong Kong Dance Company and the City Contemporary Dance Company in 1989 and 1993 respectively and is the co-founder and Artistic Director of Unlock Dancing Plaza. Active in choreography for more than a decade, his works have been featured in numerous international and Hong Kong festivals.

Zelia ZZ Tan is a cross-disciplinary dance artist who focuses on presence and identity. As a pioneer in dance x technology in Asia, she creates virtual and hybrid performances with motion capture, AR, VR, etc. As a founder of TechDanceLab, Tan is based in Hong Kong and works globally with masters like Gilles Jobin and Sasha Waltz.

Karena Lam is a multi-faceted and well-respected Hong Kong-based actress, artist, curator, and the ambassador of French May Arts Festival. Besides being a mother of two and the first to have won the Golden Horse Film Awards for Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress and Best New Performer, she has a deep passion for photography and pottery. In 2020, she was awarded the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government in recognition of her efforts in promoting French Arts
