NOT a fashion store!

19 March 2021 - 5 January 2022

This NOT a fashion store! exhibition showcases over 70 artworks related to fashionable and classic clothing, shoes and accessories from various eras curated from the four core collections of the HKMoA – Chinese Antiquities, Chinese Painting and Calligraphy, China Trade Art, and Modern and Hong Kong Art. The exhibition venue will be transformed into a one-of-a-kind “fashion store”, allowing visitors to stroll around and enjoy the works of art from a new perspective in a familiar circumstance. Our “store” has several departments showcasing men’s and ladies’ fashions, chic shoes, vintage clothing, accessories and hair ornaments as well as an XXL corner plus the studio and a wonderland. There are lots of things to think about when we go shopping for clothes before we make a decision on what to buy. When we stand in front of the mirror and hold up what we have selected to compare and make sure the outfit is right for us, it is one of the few moments when we examine our own image carefully. The mirrors in each department feature questions you may raise when you’re trying on new clothes and exploring your image and style from a different angle: do you have a set perception of what men and women can wear? Do you have a special fondness for certain types of clothing? What about colours? Are you a dedicated follower of fashion? …Fashion elements such as types, colours, styles, craftsmanship, materials, patterns, trends, etc., are basically similar to the themes, colours, techniques, and styles found in artworks. While admiring the originality of the “fashions” on display, you can enter a dialogue with the artists and reflect with them on the issues they present, the aesthetic elements of their works and cultural trends as we explore meanings to gain a greater insight into Chinese civilisation.
HKMoA has engaged two local artists ―Lam Yan-kit, Keith and Fung Lik-yan, Kevin ― to use their creativity and add some extra colour to our special “store” in The Wing on the ground floor with an artistic wonderland.
Come and visit this exceptional “store” and enjoy contemplating the connections between fashion trends and art appreciation.

Established in 1962, HKMoA is the first public art museum in the city, now custodian of an art collection of over 17,000 items, representing the unique cultural legacy of Hong Kong's connection across the globe. By curating a wide world of contrasts, from old to new, Chinese to Western, local to international, with a Hong Kong viewpoint, we aspire to refreshing ways of looking at tradition and making art relevant to everyone, creating new experiences and understanding.
