EVENT DESCRIPTION

M+, Asia’s first global museum of contemporary visual culture in the West Kowloon Cultural District in Hong Kong, is pleased to present the first edition of M+ at Night, a Friday evening of creative workshops, live music performance and screenings on Friday, 13 January 2023. The museum will also host expressive arts therapy experiential workshops in collaboration with the University of Hong Kong (HKU) between January and March 2023.  

M+ at Night

Complementing Yayoi Kusama 1945 to Now, the first ever M+ at Night will take visitors on a journey through Kusama’s creative outpouring and philosophy of life, focusing on the present and revel in a quiet contemplation of art. All activities will be available on a drop-in basis, and those taking place on the ground floor and B1 will be free for all visitors to join. Yayoi Kusama 1945 to Now ticket holders are also invited to the in-gallery activities on 2F. The event will explore different corners of M+ with creators from across disciplines and allow visitors to wander through the museum at their own pace.

Workshop: Designing a Tattoo Collage

Artist Igor Chan Chun-hin will guide participants to create tattoo collages using patterns inspired by the works of Kusama. Visitors are invited to unleash their creativity and experience the artist’s aspiration of self-obliteration and interconnectivity in this workshop.

Workshop:

The Net of Hope

Be inspired by Death of Nerves (2022), a newly commissioned work by Yayoi Kusama. With guidance from M+ Educator, visitors will learn to express their feelings by juxtaposing shapes of various colours. They will join hands with other participants and display their craftwork next to the installation to form a massive net together.

Grand Stair Screening

Featuring a compilation of in-house animations, collection highlights, and artist interviews, the Grand Stair Screening will offer a friendly yet playful introduction for visitors of all ages to the world of art. This screening consists of Seeing Beyond the Visible, Human Body, YAYOI KUSAMA–Earth is a polka dot, Seeing Like a Traveller, Signs and Signals, and How to Build a Museum: SUPERCUT.

Live Music Performance

Visitors will be invited to join neo-chamber ensemble Sea Island & Ferry, who specialise in performing musical narratives that unfold like a film. Producer and DJ JVSY will interweave classic and contemporary elements in their performance, allowing visitors to enjoy this multisensory experience and let the rhythm turn into healing. Members of M+ Young Collective will also converse with the musicians about Kusama’s works.

Visitors will be invited to embark on a short journey with M+ Guides, who will spotlight different objects on display. They will learn more about Pumpkin (2022), an iconic sculpture that reflects Yayoi Kusama’s perception on life and nature, on view in the Main Hall.

Young People Meet-up: Building Kusama’s Boundless World through a Board Game

(for all exhibition ticket holders)

Dive into Yayoi Kusama’s boundless world with members of M+ Young Collective. Visitors will explore the impossible with worldbuilding through the board game ‘One Hour to Build the World’, designed by Kaelan Doyle-Myerscough. Visitors are invited to present their imagined world through writing and collaboratively build a world intertwined with fantasy and reality by answering creative prompts.

Pop-up Chat by M+ Staff

What goes on behind the scenes at the museum? Visitors will be invited to join M+ staff from across M+’s Curatorial, Learning, Conservation, and Retail teams, who will share their stories while preparing for Yayoi Kusama: 1945 to Now—from insights on the artist’s creative practice to the planning process of and fun facts about the exhibition.

Self-guided Tour: Five Ways to See Kusama

(for Yayoi Kusama 1945 to Now ticket holders)

Visitors can get their own copy of a self-guided booklet designed exclusively for Yayoi Kusama: 1945 to Now at the ground floor Information Desk. Through a series of fun and simple activities, visitors will learn to see Kusama’s works from various perspectives. They can also follow the booklet’s instruction at their own pace and create special memories.

Audio Guide

(for Yayoi Kusama 1945 to Now ticket holders)

Visitors can listen to audio soundtracks in which M+ curators share insider stories about the works by Yayoi Kusama, her creative practice, and philosophy of life. Visitors can also listen to an exclusive sharing from artist Ivana Wong. Audio guides are available in Cantonese, English, and Mandarin.

M+ Cinema presents Kusama–Infinity. The documentary unpacks the life of Yayoi Kusama from her upbringing in rural Matsumoto to a flight over the Pacific Ocean that eventually led her to the New York City art scene—becoming one of the most iconic Pop Art pioneers of the twenty-first century.

Expressive Arts Therapy Experiential Workshops in collaboration with the University of Hong Kong

M+ will present expressive arts therapy experiential workshops, inspired by Yayoi Kusama 1945 to Now, in collaboration with The Centre on Behavioral Health, The University of Hong Kong. Drawing on the life philosophy of the artist, registered Arts Therapists will lead participants to express themselves through different art modalities to foster deeper personal growth.
