EVENT DESCRIPTION

Lynus Woo is delighted to announce his first-ever solo exhibition Lynus Woo: A Pilgrimage in Colours in Hong Kong on 21 May to 24 May 2022 in REP., Central. The exhibition’s keynote features a group of works produced since 2019 upon Lynus’ return to Hong Kong.

Lynus Woo: A Pilgrimage in Colours explores and stretches the possibilities of colours in capturing the multifaceted human emotions and inner thoughts that might not be evident in one’s immediate countenance. Born and raised in Hong Kong, Lynus studied Fine Arts at the University of Oxford. Since graduating from The Ruskin School of Art in 2017, he returned to Hong Kong and continued developing his artistic practice.

“Art is reflected in our daily lives through everyday situations and encourages us to better understand our emotions,” says Lynus Woo. “Being influenced by Western and Eastern traditions, my art reflects my perspective of the world while expressing my emotions more openly through painting on canvas. Over the years, I have become enamoured with portraiture, which stems from my belief that every person is unique and has a story to tell.”

Josef Albers has had a major influence on Lynus’ artistry. How Albers passionately discussed the relative influences of colours towards each other and the viewer, as if colours could ‘behave’ and ‘act’ in an anthropomorphic fashion never ceased to fascinate Lynus.

The main focus of the exhibition “~700 Nanometers” features Mr Tung Chee Hwa, Mr Ho Hau Wah, Mr Andrew Li, Mr Woo Po Shing and Mrs Helen Woo, Ms Pansy Ho, Mr Julian Hui, and Mrs May Woo. As members of his family and those he has a close relationship with, the vivid scarlet lauded their dedication towards their families and those they hold dear. Each canvas in its blazing redness is a letter of admiration paying respect to the love and devotion the subjects unconditionally shared.

The show also inaugurates REP., a brainchild conceived by the artist during the city’s pandemic lockdown. The fitness centre incorporates a gallery space that promotes creativity, innovation and social interaction. The concept aims to blur the boundary between fitness and art, driven by the artist’s philosophical belief that the human body is a living sculpture that constantly evolves, as does the versatile design of REP’s fitness space.

ABOUT THE ARTIST / ORGANISER

Lynus Woo (born 1995) graduated from the Ruskin School of Art at Oxford University in 2017. He has since taken up a prolific career as an entrepreneur, a bodybuilder, a personal fitness trainer while pursuing his unceasing passion for artistic creation.

Lynus' works primarily with oil paint as his preferred medium. His artistic practice focuses on colour perception as an entity that provides a conceptual framework that embodies, fosters and represents human emotions. His oeuvre to date hence presents a shift in subject matter from streetscapes to people inhabiting these spaces, and subsequently narrowing down to portraitures of his acquaintances, friends and family, and ultimately, himself. Viewers will find influences from celebrated contemporary artists, including Lucian Freud, Cecily Brown and Jenny Saville, in his modus operandi.
