JCNAP Mobile Theatre: Between Sounds & Silence

Presented by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council (HKADC), JOCKEY CLUB New Arts Power (JCNAP) announced that JCNAP Mobile Theatre: Between Sounds & Silence will run from November to January 2022. The season will feature 18 free pop-up performances in various locations throughout Hong Kong. General public are invited to enjoy a refreshing live performance in the bustling city.

JCNAP Mobile Theatre: Between Sounds & Silence is collaboratively created by Wuji Ensemble, Run-around Ensemble and installation artist Jaffa Lam. During the 25-minute performance, musicians will perform newly rearranged Chinese classical pieces and original compositions written by Run-around Ensemble, with Chinese plucked string instruments and a wide array of percussion instruments. Lyrical phrases are juxtaposed against dynamic rhythms, projecting an image of a sound oasis in the hustle and bustle of urban life.

Mavis Lam, concert leader of Wuji Ensemble, says, “We are pleased to take part at JCNAP Mobile Theatre: Between Sounds & Silence and interact with audience from all walks of life. This mobile theatre setting emphasises on improvisation and interaction. It is an extraordinary and interesting music-making experience performing with the ambient sound of different environments, like the hubbub in the shopping mall, children’s laughter in the park and the noise of the surrounding traffic.”

Margie Tong, representative of Run-around Ensemble, says, “Apart from the ethnic musical instruments (Quijada, Shamanic drum and Hang), we also perform with daily housewares like abacus, the inner pot of rice cooker, iron lid and wooden spoon in this mobile concert. Through a series of lively arrangements performed by novel and unconventional instruments, we hope our audience can enjoy a performance created by the combination of traditional music, urban sounds and innovative creative concepts.”

The music performance has also incorporated the use of a large scale sound installation created by acclaimed local artist Jaffa Lam. The installation is made from recycled materials collected from the community, including trolleys, and iron pipes. Jaffa Lam says, “We have forgotten to pay attention to our surroundings in the pursuit of speed and efficiency, especially the people and things in old communities. Through this installation of recycled materials, I hope people can treasure seemingly insignificant things around us. Additionally, this programme provides a precious opportunity for artists to tour around different locations and exchange with audience of all ages and background.”
