EVENT DESCRIPTION

Step Creation Gallery is thrilled to announce the highly anticipated solo exhibition of Hom Nguyen’s art in Hong Kong, entitled “Entité”. The exhibition showcases a stunning collection of 22 large-format portraits created using a variety of techniques including black stone, charcoal, felt, gouache, oil, ink, and acrylic.

Hom Nguyen is a French artist of Vietnamese origin, whose works are a testament to his deep commitment to exploring the complexity of human emotions. His art fuses figurative and abstract elements, blurring the boundaries between material and intellect, emotion and inquiry. With his latest series, “Entité”, Nguyen offers a captivating exploration of the human essence, delving deep into the foundations of his subjects’ lives and presenting them in an entirely new light.

Each of Nguyen’s portraits exudes a sense of dignity, respect, and benevolence, inviting the viewer to reflect on the very essence of what it means to be human. From his masterful representation of children, women, and the elderly, Nguyen offers a poignant reminder of the importance of empathy and understanding in our world today.

The exhibition takes its name from the French word for “entity,” a term that perfectly captures the driving force behind Nguyen’s creative process. “Entité” is an ode to transmission, integration, exodus, and commitment. Through his unparalleled attention to the human form, Hom Nguyen’s “Entité” speaks to everyone, offering a compelling and deeply moving portrait of the human experience.

Hom Nguyen’s previous works have been exhibited worldwide, including in France, Morocco, South Korea, Thailand, Singapore, and Hong Kong’s own Art Central. His art is lauded for its ability to explore themes of integration and immigration in a non-political manner. With “Entité”, Nguyen presents a collection of portraits that beautifully capture the inner worlds of his subjects, transcending boundaries and inviting the viewer to connect with the intimate and often repressed parts of themselves.

The opening of Entité will be held on 11 May at Soho House from 5pm until 10pm in the presence of Hom Nguyen.

ABOUT THE ARTIST / ORGANISER

Hom Nguyen is a Franco-Vietnamese artist born in 1972. He lives and works in Paris. Hom Nguyen's style, in its connection with expressionism, speaks to everyone, with immediacy. His unique approach vibrates with contained vivacity revealing a connection to Western culture – totally free, without boundaries, leading him towards other traditions like Asian art and philosophy, calligraphy, and Chan Buddhism.

The artist's work is a matter of existential commitment. It keeps a record of the ordeals experienced. It tells the truth, revealing it more extensively, and with deeper intensity. Hom Nguyen's art merges the visible with the invisible, intimate whims with fleeting dreams. In perpetual movement, incessantly renewing themselves, constantly experimenting with different mediums, Hom Nguyen's lines give form to, and simultaneously disfigure, the image emerging from a magma of overlapping tangles and spider-like superimpositions.

Between imprint and dissolution, temporary and eternal, Hom Nguyen's style is particularly sensitive to the human values he embodies and conveys: a sentiment of appeasement, respect, and communion. Values which for him are the foundation of all art, like a path that links one human being to another, and all of us to each other.
