EVENT DESCRIPTION

The 12th edition of Festive Korea, organized by the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Hong Kong and the Korean Cultural Center in Hong Kong, in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the Republic of Korea, as well as with the support of the Government of Hong Kong SAR, is grandly held under the theme of “Fun(興) of Korea” this October and November. With the aim of sharing Korean culture and developing meaningful collaboration between Korea and Hong Kong, Festive Korea has attracted millions of audiences since it was first launched in 2011. Hong Kong citizens can experience the diverse charms of Korea through over 35 arts and cultural programs including performing arts, visual arts, films, sports, and K-Food.

Series of K-Pop and K-Culture events with “Korean Culture Scene”
This year, the Korean Cultural Center in Hong Kong co-hosts with the Korean Culture and Information Service (KOCIS) and another five Korean Cultural Centers in other countries and cities a special bundle of programs called ‘Korean Culture Scene’ which presents quality Korean culture contents. For Hong Kong citizens, a series of K-Pop-themed events will be presented.

Organized by the Korean Cultural Center in Hong Kong, K-Pop Community Festival will be held on 5 November 2022 at 6 PM at Rotunda3, Kowloon Bay International Trade & Exhibition Centre. Audiences can dive into the immersive K-pop experience with different Hong Kong K-Pop dance crews and influencers. In order to create the most authentic K-Pop experience for the audience, the famous Korean girl group OH MY GIRL is invited to participate in this event via a live stream collaboration.

“Korea Square 2022” will be held for two days from 22nd to 23rd Oct in West Kowloon Cultural District. It is an open marketplace-type cultural space that centers on Korean food, lifestyle products, and culture, showcasing various Korean products. Visitors can also enjoy fascinating on-site performances ranging from music to Taekwondo.

To celebrate Breakdancing’s debut as an official Olympic sport in Paris 2024 Olympic Games, a crossover stage by Korea’s leading breakdance crew in collaboration with a fusion Korean music group “Meet the world, Center of the world” will be showcased on 6 November 2022 at Rotunda 3, Kowloon Bay International Trade & Exhibition Centre. Korean Breakdance crew “JINJO CREW” which has achieved the world’s first grand slam in the top 5 major international B-boy competitions will rock the stage with their powerful and breathtaking performance, in collaboration with a fusion Korean music group “Jeong Ga Ak Hoe”.

If you are a fan of K-Pop idols, you must have a lightstick. The Korean Cultural Center in Hong Kong is going to hold a K-Pop lightstick exhibition “Lights of K-Pop” from 25th October to 26th November, showcasing 50 to 60 kinds of lightsticks, allowing visitors to understand more about the culture of lightsticks.

Besides the above events, the Exhibition “K-Pop, Now Here”, Korean Popular Culture Talk, “Meet Again” K-Concert Screening Event, and K-Pop Dance Video Contest “Dear K-POP from Hong Kong” are also included in the series of Korean Culture Scene.

Festive Korea 2022 Highlighted Programs
In addition to the performances mentioned above, Hong Kong’s audience can meet stunning Korean musicians and performers at this year’s Festive Korea. World-renowned superstar soprano JO Sumi will captivate Hong Kong’s audience with her voice at the HKGNA Music Festival 2022 “Music on the Harbourfront” Opening Concert, presented by Hong Kong Generation Next Arts, on 18 November. Besides, the performing team ‘Hanuri’ composed of professors, alumni, and students of School of Korean Traditional Arts in Korea National University of Arts(K-ARTS) will perform Korean folk music traditions including intangible cultural asset “Jindo Ssitgimgut”(Purification Ritual of Jindo), from 16th to 17th Nov, in Pungmul concert.

Festive Korea 2022 will also present a series of exhibitions starting in late September. Following last year, Hong Kong audiences can enjoy the beauty of Korean contemporary ceramics and crafts at the booth F2 “Korean Ceramic Pavilion” at Fine Art Asia 2022 (5-8 Oct 2022), and later at the Korean Cultural Center in Hong Kong (12 Oct-19 Nov 2022). In November, Korean Cultural Center in Hong Kong presents the second Open Call exhibition 2022 “RE: Artechne” (24 Nov 2022-21 Jan 2023), showcasing textile artworks of Fiber4Now, a group of four Korean textile artists—KANG Hwayoung, SONG Eunsil, OH Seungah, and LEE Siwon. Arechne is the combination of the two words ‘art’ and ‘techne’. As the origin of the word implies, Fiber4Now positions themselves in the field of Artechne, on the boundary of art and technology. The audiences would find each artist using a different medium and technology, yet all present the latest state of Korean textile art.

For Korean food lovers, you should not miss K-Food Masterclass and K-Food Top Chef 2022 Cooking Contest. The director of the Korean Regional Culinary Culture Research Center and the Sejong Daom Cooking Academy Ms. KIM Jungmi will visit Hong Kong for this year’s K-Food Masterclass series to give hands-on cooking classes on exquisite Korean palace cuisines as well as in-depth talks on Korean food culture. Besides, “K-Food Top Chef 2022” is the most prominent Korean food cooking contest in Hong Kong, contestants have to make creative and unique dishes using Korean ingredients and cooking methods.

The Korean Cultural Center in Hong Kong will continue working with Hong Kong Asian Film Festive (HKAFF) this year and present the best selected Korean films for Hong Kong audiences to enjoy in the cinema, feel the attractiveness of Korean films, and encourage audiences to have ongoing support towards Korean and Asian films. Also, hosted by Korean Cultural Center in Hong Kong, the Korean Independent Film Showcase will be presenting 3 different independent films of different genres.

For sports programs, Festive Korea 2022 will bring to you Korea Games 2022 and 2022 K-Game Festival – Summoners War. “The Korea Games” program brings fun and light Korea-themed sports games to Hong Kong, including Ddakji, Jegi, toy archery, red-light green-light, and so on. Besides, Com2uS China, Korea Creative Content Agency, and Korean Cultural Center in Hong Kong will jointly organize the 2022 K-Game Festival with the game Summoners War.
