David Kaye: Eyes Wide Shut

8 June 2022 - 26 June 2022

Free

EVENT DESCRIPTION

Born in Bradford, England in 1986, led a dynamic life – David Kaye found inspiration in golden-age cartoons as a child and served in the British Army in Afghanistan in his adult years. During his years in the army, he rediscovered his feverish passion for art as he doodled objects found from issued magazines, except he replicated them with inspirations he drew from cartoons as a child.

After serving in the forces, Kaye was in turmoil but found peace in art by fusing emotions into his works both explicitly and inexplicitly. He used his kitchen as his studio and began painting portraits with self-taught techniques seen in his works today. Kaye’s daughter is another major source of his inspiration, ranging from her fascination with magical creatures, like unicorns, to her adoration of Kaye’s childhood toys.

Through Eyes Wide Shut, Kaye wants us to embrace our inner child and see the world through the eyes of a ten-year-old once again. By letting colours in, one can make even banality a whimsical journey.

ABOUT THE ARTIST / ORGANISER

David Kaye was born in Bradford, England in 1986. From an early age, David was drawing the cartoons with his own little twist. Whilst he was serving in Afghanistan with the British army 10 years later, he found time to burn in between patrols, thus rekindled his passion in drawing. The self-taught painter practised drawing objects that were in magazines that had been sent to the army and mixed it with a cartoon aspect of the things he used to draw when he was a child.

Kaye’s collection was seen in exhibitions around the world, such as the solo show at the NYCH Gallery in Chicago in 2021, and group shows at Laputa Art Center in Shanghai in 2021, Learn and Skate in Paris in 2021, the GALERIE OVO in the Art Fair Philippines in 2021, the Waluso Gallery in London in 2020, and more.
